Walmart has announced a new partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its shopping platform, allowing customers to make purchases using the AI chatbot. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon stated that this collaboration aims to transform the traditional eCommerce experience, which has long relied on search bars and item lists. The new AI feature promises a multi-media, personalized, and contextual shopping experience.

“For many years now, eCommerce shopping experiences have consisted of a search bar and a long list of item responses. That is about to change. There is a native AI experience coming that is multi-media, personalized and contextual. We are running towards that more enjoyable and convenient future with Sparky and through partnerships including this important step with OpenAI,” McMillon said.

The partnership, announced on Tuesday (October 14), is part of Walmart's broader strategy to incorporate AI into its operations. The retailer's AI shopping assistant, Sparky, debuted in June, following Amazon's launch of its Rufus shopping assistant earlier in February 2024. Walmart's collaboration with OpenAI seeks to catch up with competitors in the AI-driven online commerce market.

The integration of ChatGPT will allow customers to plan meals, restock essentials, and discover new products through chat-based interactions. OpenAI's Instant Checkout feature, initially supporting single-item purchases from Etsy sellers, will soon include Walmart items, although the exact launch date remains unspecified.

OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting its potential to simplify everyday purchases. Walmart is also leveraging AI to enhance product catalogs, reduce production timelines, and improve customer care resolution times.
