22.6 Million U.S. Employees Will Miss Work Today
Did you wake up this morning . . . pull yourself together . . . and force yourself to go to work? Or did you suddenly come down with "that bug that's been going around"?
According to an annual survey, an estimated 22.6 million American workers PLANNED to miss work today, Super Bowl Monday.
That's up from 16.1 million last year, and it also breaks the previous record of 18.8 million from 2023.
There may have been even more no-shows than that, because this was just people who PLANNED to stay home. There were probably more who decided at the last minute not to go in.
On top of that, another 12.9 million employees said they planned to go into work LATE on the Monday after the big game.
This is why people keep talking about just making Super Bowl MONDAY an annual holiday. Since so many people go ALL OUT for the game, in one way or another.
In a survey from last month, 55% of Americans said the Monday after the Super Bowl should be a national holiday.
But the NFL could make this debate moot, by pushing the Super Bowl back one week so it lines up with Presidents' Day. (Which is already a national holiday, even though not everyone gets it off.)
The Super Bowl schedule is set for the next two years, but there's a possibility that an 18th regular season game could be added in the 2027 - 2028 season, and if that's the case, the entire postseason could get pushed back one week.
Nothing is official yet . . . and the players' union says "no one" wants to add another game to the season . . . but in the end, money talks, and a lot of analysts expect it to happen at some point.
